Searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to study the interaction between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and human innate immune cells. The successful candidate will help develop projects characterizing the interaction of M. tuberculosis with macrophages in the context of aging. The candidate will be expected to perform basic research studies, including developing protocols, designing, conducting, and interpreting experiments and collecting and analyzing research data; preparing talks, grants, and manuscripts for publication; critically searching and reading published literature; attending and presenting research results at local and national meetings; attending laboratory meetings; and may train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in studying human responses to diseases, inflammation and immunity. The successful applicant will report to Dr. Larry Schlesinger and his lab director and be part of a larger group of infectious diseases and tuberculosis researchers at Texas Biomed. Mentoring for career advancement is an important element of the position.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: REQUIRED: Ph.D. in immunology, microbiology, cell biology, or a related discipline. Knowledge and experience of human immunology, cellular immunology, and cell biology is required. Extensive tissue culture (including working with primary cells) and BSL2 experience, microbiology, and immunology techniques including culturing bacteria, and microscopy skills are required. Must pass a basic FBI background check to work in the BSL3 with M. tuberculosis. Must have at least one first authored manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal. PREFERRED: Experience working with human cells and working in a BSL3 facility.  Experience in basic molecular biology and biochemistry is preferred, including PCR and Western blotting.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work may involve exposure to carcinogens, toxic materials, hazardous chemicals, compressed gasses, infectious agents (BSL2 and BSL3), and other occupational hazards. For work with BSL3 organisms like M. tuberculosis, must be able to wear a respirator in the proper manner and pass a respirator fitness test. Participation in a medical monitoring program is required. Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.
