Research Assistant

This individual will work in the Behavioral Services department helping to improve the well-being of nonhuman primates at the facility. Duties include socializing nonhuman primates, monitoring the behavior of nonhuman primates and making recommendations to veterinary and colony management personnel, and collecting behavioral data.  Duties may also include planning enrichment strategies for nonhuman primates, and preparation and provision of enrichment.  The individual will keep and review written and computer-based records, and summarize and analyze data.  The individual will also participate in annual training seminars for departmental staff. The individual will be working in the Behavioral Services department.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:         Required: Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, psychology, zoology, or related field.  One year experience with animals.  Good organizational and computer skills, good oral and written communications skills, and the ability to work independently. Preferred: Course work in primatology preferred. Experience with nonhuman primates highly desirable.  Experience with behavioral observation and data collection with nonhuman primates.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work may involve potential exposure to infectious agents (BSL-2) and chemical hazards (cleaning products).  Requires some work outdoors in the heat or cold.  Will work with baboons and macaques. May sit at a computer for long periods of time. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and carry for short distances without assistance. Employee may drive a motor vehicle on Texas Biomed business. Must have a valid driver’s license and meet Texas Biomed driving standards. Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required.   Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.

OTHER:     This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position.  Texas Biomed business hours are Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace.  Pre-employment drug screen is required.
