Research Assistant

Candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team investigating how viruses infect cells with an interest in discovery of new antiviral drugs. Primary responsibility will be making reagents for analysis of virus infection, performing virus infection assays and analysis and contributing to the running of the lab including ordering laboratory supplies. Keeping good laboratory notes is essential as well as ability to work within a team environment. This individual will report to Dr. Robert Davey.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Required:  B.S. degree in biology. Experience in cultivation of bacteria, construction of recombinant plasmids, cultivation of mammalian cells, good record keeping and communication skills. Must have good math skills. Knowledge of operation of centrifuge and general laboratory techniques. Computer skills using Microsoft Office. Must be able to pass a Dept. of Justice background check. Must be able and willing to work in a biosafety suit.  Preferred: Computer skills including experience with MATLAB, mammalian cell culture for large scale protein production, graphing software, statistics analysis of data. Basic knowledge of microscope operation. Understanding of virology or cell biology. Previous experience with recombinant DNA, mammalian tissue culture and microscopy.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS:  This work may involve exposure to cryogenics, compressed gases, and infectious materials (BSL-2, BSL-3, BSL-4). Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required.  Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided. Must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator in a proper manner and, if necessary, pass a respirator test.

OTHER:     This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position.  Texas Biomed business hours are Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace.  Pre-employment drug screen is required.
