The research assistant will prepare, assess, and distribute enrichment to nonhuman primates. Additionally, this position involves the creation of enrichment schedules, the maintenance of computerized records, monitoring of behavior, behavior data collection, meeting participation and some public speaking. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Behavioral Services.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:   Required: BS degree in animal science, anthropology, psychology, zoology, or related field. At least one-year experience working with animals. Good organizational skills, good oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently. Preferred: Coursework in primatology. Work experience with nonhuman primates. Experience with designing/building enrichment devices and experience with power tools. Experience with behavioral data collection. Public speaking experience preferred.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work may involve potential exposure to bulk cleaning products (Enviro-B), and infectious materials (BSL-2). Some work performed outdoors in the heat or cold. May need to use power tools such as a drill or saw. Exposure to animals such as baboons and macaques and other small mammals. May sit at a computer for long periods of time. May drive a motor vehicle on SFBR business. Must have valid Texas driver’s license and meet Texas Biomed driving standards. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and carry for short distances without assistance. Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Immunization for hepatitis B is required unless waived by the employee. Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.

OTHER: This is a full time salary (exempt) position. Texas Biomed business hours are Mondays through Fridays – 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.
