17-082 Veterinary Research Technician Position – SNPRC

The Veterinary Research Technician provides support and technical assistance on research, clinical and surgical procedures. Will also be responsible for providing ongoing care and health maintenance for all animals within the Institution under the direction of their immediate Supervisor or Veterinarian.

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
VRT II
Required: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma. AALAS Certification at the ALAT Level OR Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) required.
Preferred: Sixty (60) hours from an accredited college or university or Associate Degree from an accredited college or university OR high school diploma or general equivalency diploma plus experience. Preferred Major: Science
Experience: If candidate has 60 hours from an accredited college or university or an Associate’s degree, a minimum of two years of closely related experience, with at least one of the two years completed in a research/veterinary environment, is required. If candidate has high school, requires four years of closely related experience. Must be able to demonstrate expertise in their technical field in order to be assigned this classification.
VRT III
Required: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma. AALAS Certificate at the LAT level OR Licensed Veterinary Technician required.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS:
Work involves strenuous physical activities of various kinds with continuous exposure to hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, unpleasant work conditions such as exposure to unpleasant odors or adverse weather conditions. Will work with the following biological hazards – infectious materials (BSL-2) herpes B virus, SIV, HIV, STLV, Vaccinia, Tuberculosis, Shigella, Adenovirus, etc., and medical waste. Will work with Baboons and Macaques. Physical hazards include compressed gases, cryogenics e.g., liquid nitrogen, electrical hazards, heat/cold/noise/pressure (walk in coolers, -80 freezers, etc.), x-ray equipment. Others such as UV light, microwave, lamps, laser (black light, laser targeting (DEXA), etc. Chemical hazards include carcinogens (formaldehyde), toxic materials (powder acid, AQ-64, acetone, Cldex, etc. Other harzardous chemicals, including paint (Xylene). Bulk cleaning products (bleach, super blue, etc). This position may require participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program to include hepatitis B or other inoculations. Physical demands may include strenuous physical activity. Will work in the BSL2 and ABSL2 labs. Will sit at a computer for long periods of time. Will drive a motor vehicle on Texas Biomed business. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and meet Texas Biomed driving standards. Must routinely lift 75 pounds and carry for short distances without assistance. Must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator in a proper manner and, if necessary, pass a respirator fitness test.

OTHER: This is a full-time hourly paid position. Texas Biomed business hours are Monday through Friday 7:00a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Occasional weekend work, holidays and overtime will be required. Texas Biomedical is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.
