The successful candidate will provide technical support for research programs; conduct laboratory research at biosafety levels 2,3 and BSL-4; perform routine virology, immunology, immunohistory chemistry assays; perform quality control checks and maintain records consistent with Texas Biomed quality standards; perform data entry related to assays, assist with implementing specialized software or scientific instrumentation. Essential tasks include: directing the implementation of research projects; suggesting appropriate procedures to achieve research goals; submitting reports documenting research progress to supervisor; coordinating and reviewing the work of technical support staff; performing other duties as assigned. May act as a liaison officer between outside agencies and a research unit. May assist in the preparation of grant and contract proposals. This position will report to Dr. Ricardo Carrion.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Required: Master’s degree with major course work relevant to field of assignment and at least 4 years of relevant research experience. In exceptional cases, a Bachelor’s degree with at least eight years of relevant experience may be considered to meet the minimum education and experience requirements. Experience performing laboratory diagnostic testing including PCR, Taqman analysis, and microbiological assays is required. Experience working in an environment with well- defined quality standards. Must be able to pass a Department of Justice background check.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work may involve potential exposure to carcinogens, toxic materials, cryogenics, and infectious agents (BSL-2, BSL-3 & BSL-4 agents). Will sit at computer for long periods of time. Must routinely lift 40 pounds and carry for short distances without assistance. Must be willing and able to work in BSL-4 laboratory. Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator in a proper manner, a positive pressure biosafety suit, and, if necessary, pass a respirator fitness test. Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.
OTHER: This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position. Texas Biomed business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.
