Research Focus
Angélica M. Olmo-Fontánez, M.S., Ph.D., is a trained microbiologist with broad interests in infectious diseases, immunology, aging and biomedical sciences research. Dr. Olmo-Fontánez seeks to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms behind natural lung aging. Dr. Olmo-Fontánez studies the influence of the elderly lung mucosa (E-ALF) on M. tuberculosis infection in alveolar epithelial cells. These studies potentially establish the E-ALF as an unexplored contributing factor to the increased risk of the elderly population developing tuberculosis or other respiratory infectious diseases.
Dr. Olmo-Fontánez received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Microbiology from The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences/ Infectious Diseases from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She joined Texas Biomed in 2017.
