Katy A. Freed, Ph.D.

Dr. Katy A. Freed, a Staff Scientist in the Department of Genetics at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 2, 2017. Katy was born March 10, 1964 in Melbourne, Australia. After receiving her B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics from the University of Melbourne, she began her scientific career at the Pregnancy Research Center at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. In 2007, she accepted a research position at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute where her vibrant personality, scientific expertise, and friendship were greatly cherished. Her research focused on cystinosis, a rare childhood disorder. Her work advanced our understanding of this disease, and her lifelong passion for research has impacted affected children and parents in San Antonio and across the world.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 21, at 3pm at the Education Building, San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston Place, in San Antonio.
