Research Focus
As Associate Director of Veterinary Resources and Attending Veterinarian, Dr. Shelton leads a specialized team of laboratory animal veterinarians dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for the Southwest National Primate Research Center’s 2,500 nonhuman primates. The team oversees the health and wellbeing of the baboon, rhesus macaque and common marmoset breeding colonies, and provides expert veterinary support for a wide variety of research studies. Dr. Shelton is experienced in supporting and directing studies of gene therapy, HIV, vaccine development, implantable drug delivery devices, non-clinical safety studies and good laboratory practice compliant studies. Her research interests are focused on how early life events effect the immune system and impact the development and response to disease.
