Mabee Foundation gifts $1 million to Texas Biomed Capital Campaign

SAN ANTONIO (February 26, 2024) — The Mabee Foundation, which is celebrating 75 years of impactful investments in infrastructure and medical facilities, has granted $1 million to Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) for its Capital Campaign to expand and modernize its campus.

“To effectively combat the threat of infectious diseases, it is imperative that we have top-notch facilities to attract the best minds from around the world,” says Texas Biomed President and CEO Larry Schlesinger, M.D. “We are so grateful for Mabee Foundation’s generous support of our Capital Campaign, which is enabling the construction of new scientific spaces that will grow our workforce and expand our research and innovation abilities.”

Established in 1941, Texas Biomed has become a world-leader in infectious disease research and in developing and testing diagnostics, vaccines and therapies that improve human health. The 200-acre campus in San Antonio is undergoing a period of strategic growth that will add several new scientific buildings, including the Animal Care Complex and the Global Center for Bioscience. These investments, which also include upgrades to basic support infrastructure, are positioning the Institute for continued and sustained work in its global mission to unravel the mysteries of infectious diseases through science and cutting-edge technologies.

The Global Center for Bioscience is being designed as the new, central research building housing Texas Biomed’s renowned team of scientists and laboratories. It will also support the Center for Science Education to connect area students, teachers and residents to a network of global health expertise focused on the importance of research and disease prevention. The center will maintain a key focus on improving access and care for underserved populations.

“We are honored to have been selected for this partnership with the Mabee Foundation,” says Akudo Anyanwu, M.D., Texas Biomed’s Vice President for Development. “This support will have a huge impact on Texas Biomed’s future.”

The Mabee Foundation, founded in 1948 by John and Lottie Mabee, provides targeted investments in capital expenditures and major medical equipment in six states: Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas.

“We are pleased to help Texas Biomed realize its strategic Capital Campaign goals and we hope our investment encourages others to step forward and join this effort,” says Michael Goeke, Executive Director of the Mabee Foundation.
